Remarks

Orton Bradley Park is a 650ha property situated on the sunny side of Lyttelton Harbour. Mr Orton Bradley was a farmer, scientist, engineer, horse breeder and horticulturist, who died in 1943 and left this magnificent property in Trust. It has over 160 varieties of amenity trees that he planted between the 1880’s and 1943. Since then the plantings have continued, all of which have grown into some of the finest stands of introduced trees in Canterbury, if not the country. There is a network of approx. 20km of walking tracks among these trees, regenerating native bush, and farmland. The park provides a major access point to Mt Herbert (the highest peak on Banks Peninsula) and links to other tracks on the peninsula. Also available for public use are large sheltered riverside picnic sites, large children’s adventure playground, and extensive Rhododendron and Camellia gardens. The Park has a 9 hole golf course on-site (addition green fees apply) and tennis courts next door. The Park also has a number of Heritage buildings, including a water wheel powered millhouse and electric generation shed from the 1890’s, a blacksmiths shop, stables, dairy, 1870’s school house, and a stone cottage built in 1848.
